This place was superb! They basically do one omnivore dish and one vegetarian and charge you by plate up until you can't no more. It is a culinary experience with a lot of different flavors and textures. If you enjoy food & have an open palate then please do yourself the favor & go. Now, if you don't like to try new things... save yourself the time.
This place is by far one of the best places I've eaten at in CDMX, and one of my favorite experiences ever. Not only is the food absolutely fantastic, but the experience itself is so fun! The open kitchen makes the whole experience and ambiance electric. There's no menu and each plate ranges from 80-130 pesos. It's cash only, so be sure to bring some. You're served until you say stop, and they explain what each dish is and how to eat it. Since there's no menu, no day has the same items being served and they only use fresh and seasonal ingredients. Absolutely a must when you visit CDMX!
What We Ate: Five surprises courses including a tamale, apple taco, molletes, and a squash blossom enchilada Would Recommend? 100% yes Creative Mexican cuisine on a covered patio, serving surprise after surprise. Showed up right at opening and were treated to five unique and tasty dishes before tapping out. No menu, the server simply asks after each course if you would like another, generally alternating between vegetable-forward and meat-forward. Each dish was delightful and beautifully presented.
Cash only. No menu just vibes. Honestly so great to experience this place. The food was delicious. This is a MUST for Mexico City. We lasted 4 dishes + dessert
Bring some $$ as this is CASH ONLY!!! They don't have a menu, you just tell the servers about your allergies and food will be served. We got the crispy pork taco and the squash taco.. the pork taco was probably one of the best I have had, so fresh and flavorful, I even stole half of my husbands taco. The squash taco was such a surprise, I loved how it tasted with a peanut sauce. The servers will keep bringing different tacos until you say stop.. we had 2 each and were almost full. We asked for the dessert and they have bread with some cream and a side of honey.. not sweet but perfect! Everything here was amazing.. I highly recommend this place.
No reservations, no menu, and cash only, but don't let that scare you away. This is a MUST for anyone visiting CDMX. Expect a wait, but know that it is worth it. We lucked out as, after being told we could return in 2 hours, we were flagged down by a server as a couple had left and given up their spot because they were not aware it was cash only. We were a family of 2 adults and a 6-year-old, and happy to squeeze into the spot. Here, the open kitchen sets the stage with wood fire, fresh ingredients, and a lot of energy. There is no menu, instead the chef asks you before every course if you want more food. If you respond in the affirmative, he launches into a tale about the next dish. This continues until you have eaten more than your fill, because it's impossible to stop and miss the next dish which seem to get better and better. Expendio de Maíz Sin Nombre is not just a dining spot, it's a not-to-be-missed experience of Mexico's culinary tapestry.
If you find yourself in Mexico City, this place is a must-visit if you have the time! It was one of the best restaurants I experienced during my stay. Although we couldn't make a reservation, we waited around 45 minutes for our group of 6 to be seated. The restaurant is quite small with limited outdoor seating, so if you're with a large group, I recommend splitting into smaller groups. My favorite aspect of the restaurant was that they didn't offer a traditional menu. Instead, they tailored the food based on each person's dietary restrictions and preferences, crafting a unique course for each guest. This personalized approach made it an ideal choice for diverse dietary needs. You simply let the chefs know when you're ready to stop before they serve the next course. Overall, the food was delicious, and I particularly enjoyed Jesus' detailed explanations of each dish, complete with historical context. Considering the generous portions we received, the price of the food was reasonable and offered good value.
Expendio de Maiz delivers a delightfully different dining experience. Reservations are pretty important in Mexico, but not here. Show up, get your name on the list. Then they'll give you an estimated time. Roam around until then. If you are on your own or a small group, they will seat you with others as there are only four tables. If you're in a larger group, you may not be able to sit together, but you certainly won't be far apart. They often serve a digestive tea when you arrive. When I went it was a banana tea. They ask what your allergies are and if you have any dietary restrictions. You can also order beverages. They offer a daily house cocktail, some craft beers, mineral water, and a couple of others. Then the fun begins. They serve everyone at the table (and all of the surrounding ones) the same dish with changes based on restrictions. And then the next one. And the next one. And the next one. They will serve you until you ask them to stop! Think of this as a rotating, tasting menu. You start where they are in the menu. (The dishes are individual servings, but they are large. If you're in a couple, you may want to share, so that you can try more of them.) And the food is excellent. It is traditional Mexican dishes with bright, clean flavors. While the waitstaff will tell you what they're serving, if you ask, they won't always offer up the info, and it's fun to chat with the others at the table about what you taste. And get to know your companions, I ate with a chef and an artist from Oakland, California, and architects from Mumbai. We all enjoyed the food and shared ideas of what else to explore in the city.
Absolutely amazing experience - they kept serving until we said no more! Everything we ate was explained in detail and given an origin story. Decent wait but well worth it - would go back!
This was one of the most unique dining experiences I've ever had and definitely the best meal I had in Mexico City. We got there at 1:15PM on a Thursday, and they put our names down for a 2PM seating. I was already starving by then, so we went to the Churreria El Moro nearby for a little snack. I do not recommend doing this though because I wish I could've eaten more at this restaurant! The meal started off with a light tea, and we also got the passionfruit drink. The tea wasn't anything special, but the passionfruit drink was very refreshing! The complimentary appetizer was a plantain bite, and the first course was a mushroom and tomato taco. The vegetables were so flavorful and fresh - it definitely didn't feel like it was missing meat. There was also an al pastor taco, a squash taco, a potato and pork belly dish, and a huitlacoche taco. Everything was absolutely delicious. We ended up splitting the last couple of courses because we wanted to try more food even though we were getting so full. The group that we were seated with wanted to keep eating, but Jesus, the owner, strongly recommended that they stop. I'm not sure why since he let other people order more food. While the servers are bringing out the food, Jesus is explaining the backstory behind each dish (in English). I loved hearing about how he grew up and how that inspired the food that he made. You could really tell that the food was made with love. Jesus is an interesting character - he had a lot of stories to tell. He said that the most a group ate was 26 courses one time! We ended up spending ~950 pesos for 2 people. I would recommended bringing at least 750 pesos for each person since we didn't get any alcoholic drinks. Since the menu is different every day, I would definitely come back next time I'm in Mexico City!
